So this is probably the worst timing I’ve ever had with anything. I unexpectedly got my first microdermal today placed in front of my tragus. When I got home, I found out I’m tentatively scheduled for surgery in two weeks! I knew there was the possibility of surgery in my near future but it was more like a year off so of course not in my constant thought. From what I’ve read I can either take out my piercings or replace them with acrylic, but what about the microdermal? It’s breast reduction surgery so it seems that electrocautery is used extensively. Should I get it removed before it starts to take hold and save myself the trouble? Or should I wait to see what the surgeon has to say?
I think it’s unlikely that your surgeon will be willing to do surgery on you with the microdermal in place. You could always call the surgeon and ask him/her.
The advantage to removing it sooner-than-later is, obviously, ease of removal.

surgeons can be INTERESTING. I’ve had a couple surgeries, some emergency, which I’ve kept my piercings in through. I am even planning on having an MRI soon, and I have 2 microdermals. The advantage of taking it out now is that it probably hasn’t anchored fully yet… but I would talk to your surgeon.
Sarah on January 9th, 2008 at 11:41 pmAs a very late follow-up, I ended up having this surgery in March and I only took out my lobe piercings and septum ring before arriving at the hospital. I put a small band-aid over the microdermal and left the plug in my stretched lobe and the bar in my industrial. They didn’t care about the microdermal or the bar, they just wanted to know that they were there. But the absolutely amazing part is that my anesthesiologist was concerned about my plug being lost so she personally held onto it for me and put it back in for me and taped it in place before I woke up. I believe she had her rook pierced ( She already started the drugs so I was fuzzy at this point) and she doesn’t bother to take it out for surgery. I was so amazed that they were so nice about it, it really made for a pleasant experience. This was at the University of Chicago, btw.
