i had gotten my cheeks pierced almost 3 weeks ago and had some trouble with them they had to put 5/8 inch barbells in from the swelling then they had to change the left one to 3/4 inch and it doesnt really hurt but it keeps getting like this really nasty stuff in it that leaks out like not just the lymph secretions but like thick stuff and where the ball had went inside my cheek it had made the skin rather loose ive been brushing every time i eat as well as doing sea salt soaks and H2Ocean spray on the outside of the cheeks and the skin inside is turning white and the ball is still wanting to go inside my cheek but not from the swelling just from where it had went in before like the hole wont close is it infected and what would u say the best thing to do is?
thanks
To be honest 5/8″ and quite often even 3/4″ is just a bit too short for initial cheek piercings. Most piercers I know will use jewelry that is close to 1″ or longer in length initially, to accomodate for the cheeks swelling allowance, which is a lot.
Also depending on where the placement was done, complications could definitely be occuring. If they pierced through the parotid glands or some of its ducts, problems can become quite serious.
Also brushing teeth should be kept to 2-3 times a day. As for the sea salt soaks, how are you mixing the sea salt and water together? Also how are you doing them (ie: washing your mouth out with it, soaking the outside of the piercing, etc) and how long are you doing this for?
Also depending on the bead size, you might require a little bit larger bead size, to prevent it from being sucked into your cheek. However a lot of this is just speculation, a proper in person assessment would be ideal, to troubleshoot the situation effectively.

oh ok see when i got em done the guys told me that 3/4″ was the biggest they could use on any kind of oral piercing cuz i even asked for longer due to the fact the swelling was just really horrible and as far as the brushing and sea salt soaks go i brush 3 times a day and do the sea salt soaks probably every 4-5 hours mixing 1/4 teaspoon with 1/4 cup of warm water and sometimes i swish it and sometimes i hold it in my cheeks for about 5-10 minutes ive been doing this since i got them done and of course spraying the H2Ocean on the outside of them heres a pic of where they are placed its not that great quality but shows the bead size and everything the link is under Website thanks again
Kat on January 12th, 2008 at 3:41 amI used 22mm ptfe in the last cheeks i did. They seemed to work perfectly. We were able to switch them to 1/2 labret studs when they were healed. Good luck!
Margaret on January 12th, 2008 at 4:16 pmThe solution for sea salt/water I’ve always used [and been told to use] has been 1/4 tsp sea salt: 1 cup water..

Kat on January 13th, 2008 at 3:53 amProper oral hygiene is brush after every large meal, this means breakfast, lunch and dinner. However since people rarely bring their toothbrush and toothpaste with them everywhere..it quite often means that they can’t brush after lunch.
Non-Alcohol mouthwash should be also used in correlation with this however I normally instruct people to just use the mouthwash once in the morning and once at night.
Also one of the pulsing or sonic toothbrushes also will aid in helping to remove bacteria and various food particles that are stuck in your teeth and gums.
Through-out the day and since the after lunch brushing is quite often not going to happen I strongly advise to rinse out with saline. People can either obtain jugs of Sterile Saline from Pharmacy’s or they can obtain a 4liter or 1 gallon jug of Distilled Water, you then put in roughly 3-4 teaspoons of fine grained Sea Salt and shake up and let dissolve. Then every day fill up a empty water bottle with said solution and use it accordingly.
H2Ocean can help however its not always the best option for certain individuals due to its ingredients. If it’s helping you can keep using it or you can purchase Wound Wash which is sterile saline in a can for much cheaper.

Kat on January 14th, 2008 at 6:28 amI just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here and say, if you really want to keep them, you might have to baby them for a looong time!
I’ve had mine done for 2 years, and the first year was utter hell I’m telling you, HELL.
They used to act up about once every two months, for about a week and a half at a time. And they hurt, tasted gross, and looked funny. But I took care of them and lo and behold 2 years later I have my cheek piercings still in and they have not acted up even once this last year.
After they healed, I switched to PTFE labrets because I didn’t want any gum erosion from big stainless steel balls, and since on occasion I have happened to bite down hard on the ball. I have had no problems with it, and the good thing about it is that you can trim it down to the perfect length for your cheeks.
So you’ve got to be determined and consistent if you want to keep them!
I also would like to say, stay away from drinking alcohol and really sugary candy. They can affect any oral piercings, but I had to be extra careful with my cheek piercings, I never knew what was going to set them off. I could drink a case of beer and be fine one month, then a few months after 4 beers, I’d look like a chipmunk. Also the night after I had eaten a lot of my brothers Halloween candy, they acted up so bad that in just 4 hours they swallowed the balls on the inside on an inch long barbell!
Melissa on September 22nd, 2008 at 5:54 pmget tea tree oil it is amazing. i use it on my nose whenever it gets infected. use it only on the outside though. trust me it will dry it up and have them healed in less than week!
