allright, well this isnt a problem for me right now but i just wondered if it was normal.

a few months ago i gauged my ears from a regular ear peircing (16-14 i think) to a size 10.

a few days after that i took the gauges out to clean them and the holes started bleeding quite a lot. i had blood all over my fingers.i put the gauges in and waited about a week, took them out to clean and they were fine.i still have them in and there are no problems.

can anyone tell me if it was normal for them to bleed so much?

Proper stretching protocol is highly recommended, please refer back to past QOD questions/answers:

To just put things simply, stretching from 16ga or 14ga to 10ga is NOT recommended, you should only be stretching one jewelry size at a time. As the larger the size difference the higher the chance of ripping/tearing the fistula(piercing pathway) which can lead to infections, blow outs and many other problems.

  1. If stretching more than one gauge at a time is not recommended because of possible damage to the tissue, etc. why can some people stretch more than one and not have any issues at all? For example, I have stretched from a 14ga to a 8ga and I had no problems with it. That’s 3 gauges!

  2. Robyn: As I said its not RECOMMENDED, it doesn’t mean somebody CAN’T do that…But as professional piercers we should NEVER recommend that somebody attempt that sort of method for stretching.

Also just because you have no problems currently, there might be a potential outcome of that situation later.

Consider it like an elastic band…You tug on it and it stretches and returns to normal…But if you tug on it and pull it more and more, it will stretch and thin itself out more and more eventually ripping in half…It didn’t break those first couple times but it was the 5th-10th or more before it snapped.

Understand what I’m saying? Again its not RECOMMENDED, but if people want to force their bodies into the stretch let them I say…But they need to be prepared for the consequences of their actions (blow outs, splitting, lack of blood flow, necrosis, etc.

  3. Also, everyone’s body is different. For me, I had an ass of a time trying to stretch from 10ga to 8ga. So while you might not have had any issues, there’s a good percentage of other people that will have problems. Hence, not recommended.
