Ok, so my mom is about to drag me out of the house to get my cheeks pierced. Ive been wanting it FOREVER but at the shop I used to work at, the guys wouldnt do it for me. They said they have never done it before and it was too serious of a piercing. I want to know if it is AT ALL possible to be permanently paralyzed if your cheek piercing is done wrong? I know you can get some serious infections, but is that it??

Thank you!

Lot’s of piercers will lie and say “there is no chance of being paralyzed from a piercing”. You can trust me to be more honest than that though. If the piercer slips, stabs you in the upper palate which causes you to pass out and flail around frantically and then you fall down the stairs and land on your head, thereby breaking your neck, you could indeed be paralyzed by your cheek piercings.

That being said, cheeks are tricky piercings to perform as well as to heal, and there are glands that should be avoided even though they aren’t capable of paralyzing you. You are probably far better off not getting pierced in a shop that either doesn’t know what they are talking about, or spreads lies to compensate for there lack of skill.

I think this passage could be applied to almost every piercing. Well said, Sean! :)

  2. I think the question was referring more to paralysis of facial muscles than full out quadriplegia, although I definitely enjoyed the hypothetical scenario that could definitely be a possibility in any two-story piercing studios. ;)
I’ve heard rumors of facial paralysis resulting from eyebrow and even tragus piercings, but I have no idea how possible that actually is.

  4. Ahhh, urban legends. Got to love them!

I lack the specific anatomical knowledge but I’m pretty sure more knowledgable people than me can tell you that this isn’t going to happen.

Also, if there were these significant and fragile nerves running down the face in that area, don’t you think you’d hear about bad things happening more often? Beyond the “my sister’s boyfriend’s cousin said it totally happened to some guy they talked to in a pub.” :)

  5. It’s pretty much impossible to paralyse your face from a cheek piercing. The facial nerve is the one which innervates the muscles in your face, and it runs from the brainstem, past the eardrum and into the face - once it actually reaches the face, though, it is made up of hundreds of little nerves (think of it like a tree - thick trunk in the brain, lots of tiny branches on the outside). So even if the piercing severs a couple of these, the muscles are easily innervated by all the other tiny nerve endings and voila, you’re not paralysed. Paralysis originates from a nerve root palsy - where the whole stem (i.e. trunk) is damaged. So unless you’re looking for a brainstem piercing I think you’ll be ok.
