It doesn’t seem to heal

About 2 years ago I had my nipples pierced. Everybody who had piercings done at the place I went to raved about how good they were. The shop was clean and there was an autoclave. Lots of hand washing and gloves. Anywho, my left nipple doesn’t seem to want to heal. I took the right one out when it started to migrate due to my now ex’s disagreement with my choice. There’s no infecting or pain just lots and lots of crusties I have only soaked it with sea salt before I get in the shower instead of soaping it up. (just a pinch in a shot glass.)Is there anything more I could be doing or could the healing have been set back? Sorry this is so long.
If it’s not red, painful, migrating, or genuinely infected, it’s probably just normal sebum and dead skin cells and whatnot exuding from the piercing. Nipples are notoriously schmutzy piercings, what can I tell you? Most people find at least SOME dried junk on their nipple jewellery that wants to be washed off in the shower, and most women with pierced nipples certainly notice that the amount of junk seems to correspond to where they are in their menstrual cycle - you’ll tend to get more crusties and stuff right before your period is due. I’d say just to give ‘em a bit of a wash in the shower (I like natural soaps like liquid Dr. Bronner’s, personally) and don’t worry about it.

I’ve had nipple piercings for over 2 years now, and mine still get daily crust. As Lori said, it tends to get crustier and a bit more tender depending on where I am in my menstrual cycle. I wouldn’t worry about it
Dimruthien on April 26th, 2008 at 4:17 amI don’t think it has anything to do with the way you were pierced or the job your piercer did. As Lori and Dimruthien said, nipple crusties are normal and fairly expected.
lauranomaly on April 26th, 2008 at 1:16 pmI’ve only had my nipples pierced for six months and I definitely still get a lot of crustiness. I didn’t really realize it would continue for years on end, though!
Just to add another voice, I’ve had my nipples pierced for going on 5 years now. I, too, get daily crusties. The amount of crusties fluctuates not only with my menstrual cycle but also with illness. I have no problems with mine but they can get a little cranky if I’m sick. I only soak them if they hurt or the crusties are really really abundant. The rest of the time I just wipe the crusties off in the shower once their soft.
Stephanie on April 26th, 2008 at 5:48 pmOh, yeah! Stephanie is right. I also get a bit more crust if I am sick, or have issues going on somewhere else in my body. My nipple piercings are the most sensitive to the way my body is coping with things, so I find it’s a good way to judge how sick I am, to tell when I’m getting sick, or if I’m under too much stress.
Dimruthien on April 27th, 2008 at 12:26 amSo I have had my nipples pierced for about a year now. Recently I got sick and had to have chest x-rays and they had me take my bars out. I was able to get one back in okay, but had to go back to my piercing place to have the other put back in. The piercer chastised me and told me that my nipples weren’t healed and I needed to get back into a salt soaking routine (same as used for a new piercing). He said that there should never be any “crusties” on the jewelry if they are fully healed. He told me that even though I claim no pain, no redness, no hot feeling of the flesh, no obvious drainage, that is no indication that they are healed. But from this question and the answer and other comments, I’m getting a different impression. So, exactly what does constitute a healed nipple piercing? I’m feeling very confused and am wondering if I need to make sure I don’t see this particular piercer again. Thanks!
Lavina on May 1st, 2008 at 6:41 pmThank you. I feel better now knowing that nothing is wrong. I’m thinking about seeing if I can get my one repierced but who knows since there is a little line of scar tissue from where the one side of the bar migrated.
