Nostril Piercing Question

I am considering a nostril piercing. However, due to a very strict dress code in my future profession (lawyer), I will most definitely not be able to wear the piercing at work. Are there any images available of what a well-healed nostril piercing looks like with the jewelry taken out? And how long do such piercings usually take to heal to the point that they do not close up when the jewelry is taken out?

Also, are there any images available (or would anyone on BME be kind enough to show some) of what a scar from a nostril piercing looks like, if the piercing is allowed to close up? How noticeable are such scars, usually?

Thank you in advance for any responses.

To err on the side of caution I would allow between four and six months healing time, however, something to bear in mind with nostril piercings is that they do shrink up rather quickly upon removal of the jewellery. I have had mine for 18 years and still find that if I don’t have the jewellery in for a couple of days, it can be a stingy affair reinserting it.

As for scarring, well, it’s impossible to say for sure. If you follow good aftercare there’s every chance the hole will be barely noticeable once healed BUT everyone is different. If the piercing gets irritated during the healing time then the likelihood of visible scarring is increased. My advice? If you are seriously concerned about potential scarring, don’t get any visible piercing.

As for images - a good search should yield results.

  1. YAY FOR TIFF’S FIRST POST!

And for the most part, scars from nostril piercing are comparable with acne scars. Nobody’s going to know what it is unless you point it out and explain it to them. :)

  3. honestly, i think having a gallery of piercings with the jewelry removed would be extremely helpful to BME. there are plenty of people out there who are curious and could definitely use the information.

  4. Yes, please. (I’m the one who sent in the question). I actually did go looking for images of nostril piercings with the jewelry removed, and did not find a single one. An image gallery of “retired” piercing scars and piercings with no jewelry in them would be very helpful to many people who are making such a decision, including me.

Thank you so much for the good advice; I think that I’ll forgo the nostril piercing for now, in favor of something less visible.

  5. As a fellow future lawyer (heading into my last year of school!), I totally feel your pain… I MISS my nostril piercing lots. But that said, I have bunches of ear piercings and a nape piercing no one’s ever said boo about at school, work, or interviews, so it is still 100% possible to be pierced, visibly, and be at least a moderately successful law student. :)

  6. Hey meep_meep, I have just retired my nostril piercing (well it fell out and I didn’t want the pain of getting it tapered!) and the only way you can tell it was ever there is to have your face 3 inches from my nose so you can see the -tiniest- dimple in the world.

I honestly don’t think s small, discreet nostril piercing will cause you too much strife in your career as a lawyer.

    Good luck!

  7. Wear a nostril retainer, silly. I’ve had mine in since I got it pierced (roughly 2 weeks ago) and not a soul has noticed. You can buy a quartz glass one at bodyartforms.com and you can wear them while your piercing heals. You don’t need to keep taking it out or anything. It’s great and cheap.

  8. I haven’t worn a retainer in a nostril piercing but I concur about the piercing closing up very quickly, even when it’s well healed.

My nostril piercing at 1.2mm was pretty much invisible a week after taking it out. YMMV, however.

  10. I had my nostril pierced for a few months but removed it because I developed a pretty angry red bump, and I have no scar at all. I took the jewelry our in the morning and by that evening the bump was gone, within a few weeks any indication of my nostril ever being pierced had disappeared.

  11. I’m going to be a doctor in 4 months and I’ve had my nostril, bridge, tongue and two lip piercings, all but one of which has been retired. The scar for my nostril is by far the least noticable. I also have my nape done (and have never had anything negative said about it) and am planning to get my bridge re-done and healed by the time I start work.

I don’t think it’s a problem for more employers, as long as you are able to protray a professional image. I can assure you noone will even notice the tiny scar from a nostril piercing, never mind care or even know what it is!

  12. I had my nostril pierced for awhile, and I got the dreaded red bump. I took it out and there is no scar whatsoever. At first I could see a tiiiiiiny little dimple, but now there is nothing.
