Hallo, simply put: if a vertical labret was pierced with a retainer or allowed to heal then the jewelry replaced with a retainer would it effect a person’s ability to play clarint? I know that no part of the retainer could stick out otherwise it might damage the reed, but would the piercing itself interfer with playing the instrument? Thank you for taking the time to read this, any input is appreciated.
Unfortunately, I don’t think anyone is going to be able to give you a guarantee that the jewelry won’t interfere with playing the clarinet. A retainer, or a barbell with a flat disk on the top, should reduce the chances of it causing a problem…but you won’t truly know until you try.
Based upon what you’ve said, I’m assuming you are planning on not playing while your piercing is healing. If you were planning on playing, keep in mind that any excess pressure put on your piercing while it is healing is going to slow your healing as well as increase the chance of excess scar tissue formation.

a vertical labret might not be the best piercing if you want to continue to play a clarinet, just from the way that the instrument works… it would be resting right on the reed, especially if it was placed in the center, and i can’t imagine getting the sound correct with it… and don’t you have to cover your lower teeth with your lip, too?
i now play flute, and had to give up my center lip ring for that - but the side one i have now doesn’t conflict. perhaps you may want to change what piercing you want to get… as evidenced, not all oral ones are ruled out, just some… or change your instrument
the issue of healing may not be the biggest one in regards to playing, is what i’m saying
disclaimer: i had no oral piercings during the time i played clarinet, and that time was a long while ago, so my memories may not be accurate. and, as always, ymmv.
automaticgirl on May 22nd, 2008 at 3:59 pmYou’re not actually suppose to completely cover your bottom teeth (fold you bottom lip over them). Either way due to finances, this piercing’s out of the question for now.
gypsyiguana on May 23rd, 2008 at 1:18 pmi’m a former clarinet player, and currently have a pair of vertical labrets with flat discs. i highly doubt i could play now with these piercings, regardless of jewelry - even if i could get a sound out i’d go broke replacing reeds…!
as they are a *true* lip piercing, they’re just too invasive, and have subtle but important effects on how you can move your mouth. also, due to the location, the bar cannot be snug, and depending on the position of your lip a disc at the top can easily protrude a couple of millimeters or more.
not to mention they can get in the way kissing…
redeye on May 23rd, 2008 at 8:54 pmi had a central vertical labret and it made it completely impossible to play without removing the jewellery. it restricts the movement of your lip and damages the reed.
