Wonky Septum?

Hi! Apologies for the bad webcam picture, but its all I have right now.
Now, I got my septum pierced yesterday. All well and good, apart from on the right hand side, the exit hole appears to be too far forward. Essentially, my retainer is at two different places on each side. So, as you can (hopefully) see in the picture, we have a wonky issue going on.
Now my piercer told me its just an issue that happens with new septums and it’ll correct itself…but the nose is cartalidge and that doesn’t swell unless its infected as far as I know of! Should I take it out now, allow it to heal and then get it repierced, or should I wait and see if it will correct itself?
I’m also concerned and thinking I should take it out now because I can actually feel the outline of the retainer on the right hand side by running my finger along the outside of my nose. If I apply a little pressure, I can feel the whole bar (and a fair bit of pain!). Surely thats too shallow?
I’d be very grateful for any advice you could possibly give me.

A better picture would definitely be helpful in this case, but I’ll give it whirl anyway.
It does look like one side of the piercing is further back/forward than the other. Because of the quality of the picture, I’m not sure if it’s quite a bit further back/forward, or if the shadows are making it appear that way, and it’s only slightly further back/forward.
What your piercer told you about the piercing correcting itself is not totally out-of-whack. I have seen some septum piercings that look a little bit off right after piercing end up healing perfect straight. Septum piercings definitely do swell (even if they aren’t infected), and that swelling can sometimes contribute to the piercing appearing slightly off.
The key with all of that is the piercing being slightly off. If the piercing is way off to begin with, it’s not going to correct itself. In that case, the jewelry should be removed sooner-than-later, and the piercing can be redone in a couple of weeks. If you trust the person who did your piercing originally, I would suggest returning to them and discussing your options with them. They sholud be willing to redo the piercing at no charge.

Conveniently, I managed to find my digital camera charger
So here’s a couple of MUCH better shots to give you an idea of how ‘off’ everything is. There is quite a difference in the ‘drop’ each side due to the hole placements each side, so I think based on your advice this is probably too off and will need repiercing. However, I’m tempted to leave it a week or so and see if it corrects itself, and then go from there.
Personally I blame the fact that my piercer did it freehand, perhaps ask for clamps on a repiercing?

Any further comments would be also appreciated

Labretkitty on May 28th, 2008 at 3:35 pmJust a quick question Kitty, are you keeping your retainer more up or more down?
A better picture would have been a side view and not a straight on or 3/4 profile shot, but you can definitely tell in the picture one side is further back.
I wouldn’t necessarily blame it on the fact that the piercer did it freehand, although it COULD have been a result of it…Also I wouldn’t necessarily claim that it would be straighter using a forcep (I HATE the word clamp and will NEVER use it) either.
I simply wouldn’t get your panties in a wad and point fingers and burn effigies of the piercer…I often advise my customers before doing a septum that I do my BEST to get it straight the first time…However the client needs to realize that sometimes, septums a very hard to get straight…Mainly due to how the nose and cartilage have formed, if the nose was broken before, etc, etc.
I’d say if anything keep the retainer up for a lil while (couple weeks) and if it doesn’t appear to be straightening out…Then visit the piercer and show them what’s going on and let them know you want to take it out and re-do it. The piercer if they are ethical enough will accept the situation and offer to re-do it free of charge to themselves (if anything you might be asked to pay a procedure fee only)
Warren Hiller on May 28th, 2008 at 9:27 pmThat’s very helpful, thankyou Warren
I am keeping the retainer up at the moment and doing sea soaks daily, so I’ll pop back in to my piercer in a couple of weeks and see what we can do if it’s not completely straight. I imagine he will redo it for free, as he has redone a piercing for me before that wasn’t straight.
Thanks for the general knowledge on septums too, I knew they were fiddly but I didn’t realise they were that difficult at times!
Thank you ^_^

Labretkitty on May 29th, 2008 at 8:21 amWhen I had my septum done years ago, it was done with clamps…and it came out crooked. I personally do most of my septums freehand, so I wouldn’t necessarily blame it on the technique per se.
Whether a piercing is done with clamps or freehand or a receiving tube…those things are essentially all just tools. How the piercers uses those tools, and the results they get with those tools, are really the important thing.
Derek Lowe on May 29th, 2008 at 10:36 amWhen I got my septum pierced, it looked a tiny bit off (I didn’t notice it by myself, my piercer pointed it out) but he said not to worry about it, it was just because my nose is a bit unsymmetrical. I looked closely and I could see it looked a bit wonky but I decided it was so minor I could live with that. After the swelling went down (it took quite long compared to other piercings I got) and the piercing healed a bit, I realized that it turned out perfectly straight! I don’t know why did this happen, but it did somehow.
Babysitter on May 29th, 2008 at 4:01 pmI was told that some peoples septums are deviated and coming out wonky can be inevitable. I had mine done 3 times to get it straight and on the third time they used a clamp an it came out perfect. Good luck.
