im looking into geting my cartilage stretched on my left ear where i already have a 1.6mm stud that ive had for a few years. any tips on the best way to do it as im having trouble finding a guide and the studio’s in my area say the best way is to have a dermal punch which im not too keen on.

thanks,

max.

Depending on the size you’re interested in getting to Max might dictate what is ideal and what is not ideal. As with stretching ear cartilage there is a lot more that can go wrong, then say just stretching an ear lobe.

I’d advise you to check out this previous question: http://ask.bmezine.com/2008/05/27/cartilage/.

Know that if you ARE going to stretch your ear cartilage I strongly advise you to do so slowly, wait YEARS and be very careful…Because with this its not just about causing a tear in the fistula, but more so causing a spider fracture(s) in the cartilage itself.

  1. i was thinking of going to about 4 or 6mm so nothing huge as i already have 35mm lobes.

what would be the best method of stretching then? (i.e. tapers, stretching pliers, dermal punch etc…)

  2. I can tell you from experience that stretching cartilage piercings is a bitch. I stretched both of my conch piercings from 12ga to 4ga. It took a long time to do, and in the end I wish i had them punched. I thought that if I stretched them, they would be more likely to grow back in the event that I removed them, but I doubt this will be the case, and dermal punching them would have saved much time and hassle. In case you’re interested I used regular tapers, plenty of lube, and much patience. Go slow, if the taper doesn’t want to go through, then leave it for a while more before trying again. Don’t force the taper through if it is not ready to go through easily! Stretching my conches took about 3 1/2 - 4 years, and while I did intend to go to 2ga, there just is not any more space in my ear, particularly the back where it connects to my head, to go any further. It’s a bitch to do, and takes patience, but if you are determined, then go for it. It was about as bad/fun as stretching my navel from 14ga to 0ga. Again, that I wouldn’t recommend… but thats a different story.

  3. Max0: If you’re at 1.6(14ga) and provided your cartilage is shaped properly…If you’re looking to go 4mm or 5mm in size I’d say long as its not illegal for a piercer to use a dermal punch in your area, then maybe consider that.

if you just want to stretch it as I said you’ll be wanting to wait anywhere from 1-2 years in between stretches, sometimes even longer…and you’d want to visit a professional piercer to do that sort of thing as well.
