PIercing jewelry too short ?

Hi,

my girlfriend got her nipples pierced 2 weeks ago and she’s having issues with both of her nipples.

You can actually see a very red area around the end of the jewelry. The jewelry is a 12G barbel with pink sapphirs on both ends. The sapphirs seems to create a pressure on the skin of the breast (not the nipples) and seems to enter the hole of the piercing. This is why we are thinking that the jewelry is too short.

My girlfriend is experiencing pain randomly. If there is a pressure on her nipples, the jewelry will tend to create a pressure on her breast and until she actually moves the jewelry outide the breast, she will experience random pain. When she moves the jewelry, there’s a pain but the pain goes quickly away, until she puts her t-shirt, bras or whatever can create a pressure on the nipple/breast.

You guys are more experienced than we are, could you give us some advices ? She cleans her piercings 3 times a day, as told by the piercer.

The piercing shop is closed until Thursday so this is why we are asking here.

Thank you for your time and concerns,

Guillaume & Emilie

If the balls are actually sinking into the nipple then yes, the jewellery is too short. There should be a little room to allow any exudate to drain during the healing time otherwise you are asking for trouble. I would go back to the studio at the earliest opportunity and have them pop some longer, sterile bars in there. She will notice immediate relief if this is the case. Twice daily seasalt soaks should suffice with regards to aftercare.

  1. Thank you Tiff, I will try to call the studio even if they are closed.

Is that normal that this pain started about 2-3 days ago ? She wasn’t complaining before and I could see that the pain was not that big.

By the way, I tried to upload a picture with the post and I was getting an ab_messag() script error (line 92 if I remember correctly). Just so you know :)

    Thank you very much.

  2. It’s not normal per se but it does tie in with the time frame of when piercings start to ‘lymph’ (some folk are lucky and hardly get any discharge). If the jewellery is too tight then this traps the exudate and will cause discomfort and swelling.

I’m not sure about the ‘ab_messag’ - that’s one for our tech guys!

  3. Guillaume: in the mean time have your girlfriend drink plenty of water, do warm and cold compresses on the piercings, eat a well balanced diet and get her to take an all natural herbal mega potency multi-vitamin (In Canada they call them “Stress Pills”, however not every region sells the same type of brand name, etc)

This could very well help with the swelling…Also what type of soap/shower cleanser is your girlfriend using? And what EXACTLY is she cleaning her piercing with 3 times a day?

  4. Warren : The product is called Chlorexseptic. It is not used to help healing, but to clean around the piercings. It is an antiseptic if I remember correctly.

I will advise her about seasalt soaks and everything you both mentionned. I also pierced my nipples at the same time she did, but I’m using a different jewelry (straight barbel with no sapphirs) and everything is ok on my end.

  5. I’d absolutely say she’s overcleaning, skip the Chlorexseptic altogether and do warm sea salt soaks only, twice a day at the most. Derek explained why the use of Chlorexseptic wasn’t necessary and and is detrimental in his reply to you here, so I’m sure this is all sounding very familiar to you! :)
