Hi there,
I’m an armature piercer and only have my navel pierced so as you can imagine my knowledge of piercings inst the best.
I absolutely love the nape piercing and have for some time now. Have done a lot of research and the only thing holding me back from getting it done is the fact i play basketball 2 days a week. (im a female) I dont play at a high level, just for fun with a bunch of older ladies one day and in a casual mixed team the other day.
For the first 4 - 6 weeks in the initial healing period i do not intend to play but after that i would like to start up again. Does anyone think it will be possibly to continue playing? if it got hit or anything id obv have a few weeks off until it settled down again.
Does anyone have an experiences with surface piercings namely the nape and playing sports?
ANY advice, tips or hints would be greatly appriciated.
Cheers,
Jac

For the most part, sports and body piercings don’t really get along.
If you were able to take 4-6 weeks off for the initial healing of your surface piercing that would be ideal. Wearing flat discs rather than balls will be much safer for both you and your piercing in case it gets snagged.
You should also look into covering the piercing with a Tegaderm patch. That may help keep it from snagging as well.

Just from personal experience, I’d have to say it’s a bad idea. I’ve had my nape pierced twice (I love that piercing…), but each time it started rejecting after a sports-related impact, both times after healing for over a month. You might want to try microdermals instead of a surface bar, though, as I have 2 under my collar bones that have gotten hit while playing sports and survived (though the one that got hit wasn’t too happy about it…)
Matt on July 29th, 2008 at 9:38 pmpersonally I’d say 4-6 weeks is too soon to be re-inserting yourself into a physical sport such as basketball, depending on how competitive you get.
4-6 months maybe, but not 4-6 weeks, for a surface piercing.
Warren Hiller on July 29th, 2008 at 10:35 pmThe nape sounds like trouble for ball sports. The only common location I can think of where surface piercings/anchors might stand a chance is the cleavage, depending on your breast size, using them as a kind of piercing airbag. Too big/loose skinned and the movement will be too much to heal even with a sports bra, too small and you have the same problems as you would anywhere else on your torso.
If you’re determined to give the nape a shot anyway, talk with your piercer about whether tygon, ptfe, or surface bars are best suited to your anatomy. Titanium bars are usually preferable but if you’re playing sport regularly a flexible alternative might actually have a better chance of healing.
redeye on July 30th, 2008 at 11:28 pmredeye: when the majority of piercers cannot even tell you what specific brand/grade of Tygon, PTFE,etc to use in surface piercings…I wouldn’t be going in to a studio to inquire about that type of material…Unless they can break down exactly WHAT type of Tygon or PTFE they are using, right down to the ISO or ASTM specs of the material.
Also a cleavage piercing is STILL problematic within sports, such as basketball due to the amount of impact the piercing has the chance of taking and stress the body is put through.
As I said don’t look for weeks in this aspect, look to months. And if you cannot wait months, then consider the situation a lifestyle choice you must make…To have your mods, or play the sports.
Warren Hiller on July 31st, 2008 at 1:37 ami thought i should reply to this as it was my question awhile ago.
