Getting my septum pierced

Hello,
I’ve made up my mind that I want a septum piercing, one because I really adore how it looks like and two, because absolutely no one had a piercing like this at my place. So anyway, I’m 16 but my mom still doesn’t wanna having anything to do with my piercings so she declined on giving me her consent, so like all of my other piercings (snakebites, monroe, cartilage), I’m going have to go DIY.
I’ve been researching about the pros and cons of DIY septum piercing and I’m pretty well informed than people think I am, being one of those “safety first” freak. My questions are:
1. Is it okay to use a 14g piercing needle if I’m just going to use a 16g circular barbell? And what’s the difference between a regular piercing needle and an autoclaved one?
2. If I’m just aiming for a mild look on my septum, what size of the ball should I pick? (1/2, 3/8, or 7/16)
Thank you so much.
I won’t touch on my take on the mom thing.
I won’t even touch on my take on the DIY thing.
I have covered both of those in previous entries and as always they have been positively and negatively commented/voted on. So lets just bypass all of that.
The main concern I have is when you asked “whats the difference between a regular piercing needle and an autoclaved one.” It scares me because it puts yourself, and others like you(ie: uninformed DIYers) at serious risk. If one is doing a DIY piercing they should comprehend the difference between something that is sterile and something that is not sterile.
ALL needles have to be sterilized in some fashion. Either through steam sterilization, EGO sterilization, etc. If a needle comes into your possession that has no confirmation on if it is sterile or not, it must be considered non-sterile and in fact very contaminated. As you simply do not know exactly what is on that needle. That needle could have come in contact with Hepatitis, or that needle might even have MRSA on it, or who knows what else that is potentially very harmful to you.
This is why when ever a piercer does a piercing, the needles are confirmed sterilized (ie: they either buy them pre-sterilized or they sterilize them) and are single use only. If pre-bought they will have a code number and date on the package that can be traced back to what batch, etc. If its sterilized on site at the shop, it should have the same information on the package so it can be traced in the autoclave logs, etc.
As for your question about using a 14ga needle and a 16ga piece of jewelry and if its a “bad” thing. Realistically its not “bad”, it just means you might bleed more. Another thing to consider is a potential distortion that can visually appear because of the larger hole then jewelry, along with the initial swelling that can occur, etc.
As for jewelry options I’d suggest using a Septum Retainer initially over a Circular Barbell, for healing purposes, etc. However if you’re mind is set on a Circular Barbell its hard to say what diameter you will need and in the same respect it will be hard to say what bead sizes you’ll need, without seeing you’re face in person and taking measurements, etc.
Also note if you’re looking for a CBR, its the same statement that I said for the Circular Barbell.

Well, the needles are sterilized. I was just wondering why some of the needles say auto-claved and some doesn’t. They’re “EO gas sterilized and individually packed tri-bebelled piercing needles” expiration date and such were marked on each single pack.
And as for the size of jewelry, I made up my mind for a 14g CBR 5/16″ in diameter with 4mm balls. I also purchased some retainers, for emergency purposes.
Thanks.
nickiiSTARSHIP on August 17th, 2008 at 3:51 pmANOTHER QUESTION LIKE THIS DAMN DO THESE PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO EFFIN READ! ALL OF THOSE BALL SIZES ARE EXTREMELY IMPRACTICAL ON A SEPTUM,AND PRETTYMUCH EVERY PIERCING!
Lucas Reichennek on August 17th, 2008 at 9:28 pmOk Lucas, you can fucking cut it out with the goddamned caps now. Thanks.
Dimruthien on August 17th, 2008 at 10:43 pmYeah okay, no more caps, i just figured since i’m on the internet and everything i should be yelling… Everything is better when you’re yelling right?
Lucas Reichennek on August 18th, 2008 at 12:15 amLucas: I’m going to assume that the individual was just throwing sizes out as a reference, perhaps because where said individual is from they don’t use that system of measurements and instead measure by the millimeter and don’t know the conversations.
Also I’ve come to grips/terms with the fact that the majority of people don’t pre-read AskBME before submitting a question…Regardless each one deserves to be answered, even if its referencing past links to previous questions asked and answered.
Warren Hiller on August 18th, 2008 at 12:17 amoh and also just to point out when one would use a 3/8 - 1/2″ bead size…Those bead sizes would be ideal for PA’s in either CBR, Circ. BB and even a Curved Barbell. So as the beads did not get sucked into the urethra.
just saying is all haha
Warren Hiller on August 18th, 2008 at 12:18 amyeah i know Ask Bme just seemed to be so much different back before the site changed and i can’t help but make fun of some of the questions because i hear the same question asked everyday. But a new me, NICE LUCAS. Yeah i’ll only coment when i have something to contribute and not just to burn everyone.
Lucas Reichennek on August 18th, 2008 at 12:23 amnikiiSTARSHIP: I’d be a rather bit cautious then over the needles you’ve obtained if some of them say “Auto-Claved” yet others say” EO Gas Sterilized”…
If you don’t mind me asking, where did you obtain these needles?
Also know “making up your mind” isn’t adequate if you do not comprehend what needs to be done…Personally I very rarely use a 14ga 5/16″ CBR with a 4mm ball in septums I’ve inserted that jewelry in HEALED septums, but never in a fresh septum.
If I was you I’d use a implant grade steel, titanium septum retainer initially and then save the CBR for when its fully healed.
Warren Hiller on August 18th, 2008 at 12:24 amCbr’s and CBB’s are just asking to irritate piercings, i use plugs,Curvedbarbells, straight barbells and labret studs in all the piercings i do and all my own new piercings.
Lucas Reichennek on August 18th, 2008 at 12:27 amDepends on the location, IMHO. Some placements just heal better with CBRs.
Dimruthien on August 18th, 2008 at 3:42 amThe only thing i can think that would heal better is… i can’t really think of anything that would heal better. Warren any ideas?
Lucas Reichennek on August 18th, 2008 at 11:30 pm*shrugs* I just don’t want to piss people off anymore, I’m trying to be good.
However personally the only piercings I think CBR’s would work better in are: Inner Labia, Tongue Web, Lip Frenulums (Smiley/Frowny,etc) and unless my mind is brain farting right now, thats it in my brain.
It’s not saying certain piercings like septums, etc can’t heal with CBR’s,etc in them…They most certainly can…But in my humble opinion I’m just not a fan of using CBR’s(Circular jewelry) in most piercings as I can more about efficiency in healing, not visual appeal. *shrugs*
Warren Hiller on August 19th, 2008 at 2:57 amWarren; what about lobes and horizontal clitoral hoods?
Haha i had to re-read, i thought you said “tongue” not “tongue web”
beans on August 19th, 2008 at 3:07 ambeans: ear lobes will heal fine with CBR’s, you can put most things in ear lobes and they’ll heal. However you will always have a faster more efficient healing time with a labret stud style jewelry…and that’s what I personally care about most with not just my own body, but my customers as well. That they have the most efficient/effective healing times possible.
With Horizontal Hoods, again they can wear a CBR in them, but a Curved Barbell can also be used. I’ve seen both options used in Horizontal Hoods and honestly the less movement of the Curved Barbell makes me more inclined to use that over the CBR…And if we’re talking ones personal visual aesthetics I’d rather see a curved barbell in a horizontal hood piercing then a cbr.
The CBR’s in that piercing make me just want to grab a hold of the bead gently and knock it against the hood/clitoris and start singing: “You keep on knocking but you can’t come in!” or quoting Edgar Allen Poe
Of course that would only EVER be done on individuals who I am intimately associated with lmao
Warren Hiller on August 19th, 2008 at 4:16 amagain though these are just my personal thoughts/opinions,etc,etc. people can take them with a grain of salt *nods*
Warren Hiller on August 19th, 2008 at 4:17 amand then make sure that it’s seasalt and mix one teaspoon of it with warm water and wash out their fresh piercings.
Lucas Reichennek on August 19th, 2008 at 11:06 pmLucas: I’d rather not make the reasons go Hypertonic and destroy their skin cells…Instead I’d rather them just use an Isotonic Solution so my thoughts and opinions can pass through easily and without producing harm and if they help then awesome! If not then chances are its cuz they take good care of themselves to naturally cope on their own
Warren Hiller on August 20th, 2008 at 2:35 amnotice my brain fart and trying to pull that post together to make it comical and yet ended up stupid and pointless…doh!
but yeah 1 teaspoon to warm water = nada gouda lol
Warren Hiller on August 20th, 2008 at 2:36 amYeah i typically have to look up the recipie everytime i make it since i typically just LITHA. and by warm, i mean boiled for a while.
Lucas Reichennek on August 20th, 2008 at 5:11 pmI prefer Distilled/Demineralized Water to boiling water *nods*
