Hey.

Today I got my hips pierced, at a local, reputable piercing studio. I have previously had surface piercings under the colar bones, which stayed in from late january to early july, when I decided to remove them, as they had become red and inflamed, and I felt that at least one of the piercings was likely to reject completely. I felt the piercings had never healed completely and so continued to clean them daily all the time I had them in.

I spoke to the piercer and the shop attendant about this and explained I had been cleaning my piercings 2/3 (after they became red) times a day using salt water and tea tree oil as the shop directed me to. They suggested that possibly cleaning the piercing too much could cause unnesseccary movement and suggested soaking it twice a day in salt water and otherwise leaving it alone. I haven’t heard advice similar to this before and it is a bit different to the advice given in the aftercare booklet they give out with all piercing.

Also, when I got both my colar bone and hip piercings getting the right side one hurt considerably more than the left. Both times this was done second. I was wondering if this is common, mostly out of curiosity.

I would appriciate any help about the piercing aftercare as I hear conflicting advice, both on the internet and from real life friends with piercings. Thanks =]

Twice-daily seasalt soaks and leaving well alone is the standard aftercare advice I offer as do many of my colleagues.
It is perfectly normal for one side to hurt more than the other and more times than not it is second of the two. I have my own theory on this but as I can’t scientifically back it up I’m keeping well schtum!

  1. honestly, i wouldn’t use tea tree oil on anything but a healed piercing. oil blocks air to the wound, and traps bacteria underneath?

  2. aftercare is not an exact science. i agree that tea tree oil offers no proven benefit and isotonic salt solution is the only appropriate way to irrigate a healing surface piercing.

i’m at the other end of the spectrum… i’ve had 3 pubic surface bars for a little over 6 months. i’ve had balls on them from day one (although i downsized as a compromise to aid healing), i regularly soaked them for 10 days or so after piercing then just Left It The Fuck Alone aside from rinsing the area with chlorhexidine in the shower. if i get crusties (rarely) or inflammation, i’ll soak with sea salt in a shot glass or hot compress, but since mechanical stress is limited, it’s a nice fleshy area and i seem to heal piercings freakishly well, i’d currently soak maybe monthly at most.

yes yes, i’m a terrible example to everybody, but the point is that you have to know your body and how it likes to heal. try soaking more or less often and see how your body responds. try flat disks or half domes if you can’t restrict motion. see if anti-microbials work for you or just irritate your skin.

and if all else fails, microdermals it is… :D

  3. isn’t tea tree oil a little harsh for new piercings? i use it on my lobes and (healed) septum when it gets a bit angry and it helps but for a new piercing?

  5. My first hip hurt the worst, but now the second one seems to have more pain.

I just soak mine once a day or every other day and they seem to be healing just fine! I get very few crusties and hardly any puss. But its only been 3 or 4 weeks.

  6. i just recently got my cheeks pierced and the second piercing hurt way worse then the first but my piercer explained that its due to your body still trying to recover from the first piercing so when the second one done you feel it way more… as for the cleaning its best just to do sea salt soaks and the less movement done to the piercing the better! just remember the chemicals dont heal ur piercing ur body does!

  7. I got my hips pierced yesterday, and the first hip there was little to no pain, but when I got the second 2(I got microdermals) done on the other side I was in a lot of pain.my piercer just said to use sea salt soaks and antibacterial soap.

  8. i just got mine done about 3 hours ago, by a renouned piercer. Bathing it in salt water 3 times daily is best then leave it alone, and don’t play with it or touch without washing hands initially. Also avoid letting your nails get anywhere near it. As for the pain, I only got one side done, but it hurt less than getting ears done strangely! Does anyone else agree?

  9. I got my hips done 5 days ago, how common is redness? Am I cleaning too much?
