Should piercers be using sterile gloves all throughout a procedure? (Including glove changes to eliminate cross contamination.) Or are clean, but non-sterile gloves good enough?
Properly washed hands donning clean gloves from a box is completely acceptable for a body piercing procedure.

I work in a modern GM-approved biotech lab, and even there good quality clean gloves are used in all but the most exceptional circumstances. In fact latex is much more common than nitrile. Individually packaged gloves just aren’t practical, and I must stress that there’s no such thing as total sterility outside a contained environment.

Lori St.Leone on September 12th, 2008 at 9:53 ambut don’t dentists and doctors use sterile gloves in the operating theater?
but yea. I do see the problem with individually packaged sterile gloves. plus it’s so much more expensive.
Clara on September 12th, 2008 at 11:14 amClara, doctors will use sterile gloves in an operating room. That’s because they’re performing surgery. Body piercers are not doing a surgical procedure. It’s an invasive cosmetic service in which sterile gloves are not necessary to do the job properly.
Lexci Million on September 12th, 2008 at 12:07 pmalright! Thanks a lot!
Clara on September 12th, 2008 at 7:51 pmthey’re not just a little bit more expensive either - enough “sterile” gloves for the average piercing would cost two or three times more than all other consumables combined…
