Antibiotics, septum piercing

Hi there, I’m at the tail end of my antibiotics course, i.e. I’m not sick anymore just finishing the tablets off. Would it be a good idea to take advantage of this extra ‘protection’ and get my septum pierced? Thanks!

There’s no extra protection per se as presumably the antibiotics were prescribed to treat an existing infection. I would be inclined to give your body a bit of time to recover before giving it another challenge, like dealing with a fresh wound.

  1. Oral antibiotics don’t magically target a specific wound. I don’t see why this wouldn’t be a good idea since the person stated s/he is not sick any more.

I used to work at a job that required taking prophylactic antibiotics to protect against a really nasty disease that we could be potentially exposed to. After that ended, I had some left over, which came in handy for a toenail infection that wouldn’t go away on its own. Not exactly best practice (far from it, actually), but I’m just trying to make the point that broad spectrum antibiotics can be used for either treatment or prophylaxis.

That said, taking good care of a fresh piercing and not touching it with dirty hands is the best “antibiotic” obviously.

  2. I am well aware that antibiotics don’t target a specific wound and can be used for prophylactic treatment but in this case, the content of the OPs question suggests that they may have been prescribed to treat an infection and not the latter, therefore it would be sensible to allow the body a little bit of recovery time before putting it through the strain of having to deal with a fresh wound.

  3. It seems to me that the OP loses nothing by waiting a few weeks, but stands to gain little (assuming they tend to heal piercings in a normal, healthy way) and lose more by getting pierced now. IMO, take this time to shop around for a piercer, read up a bit on the piercing you’re getting, and set up an appointment. Go in a week or two from now healthy and confident about your new piercing.
