Dear Bmezine
I’ve had an infection in my lip piercing for a weeks time now. I’ve taken all my antibiotics, but it’s not worked at all. My lip is swollen and the piercing is so sore that I can barely touch it, let alone clean it. I called the doctor this morning for more antibiotics, but she wouldn’t give them to me and just told me to take out the piercing. Knowing about trapped infections, I didn’t do that, but if I can’t get more antibiotics and the infection gets worse, what do I do?

Go see another doctor. If your doctor has already prescribed you antibiotics then I’m assuming they did so because they were satisfied that there was an infection present. Telling you over the phone that you don’t need a second course and to just remove the jewellery makes me think that they either don’t believe you - in which case you need to have them see you or that they hastlily prescribed antibiotics in the first instance for something that is most likely irritation. Either way, you need to make an appointment to see a doctor.

If the doc already did prescribe antibiotics, and the infection dit not improve dramatically, or even got worse, despite you used them, you may ask for some other antibiotics, but obviously not for the ones you used - the germs are resistant. Are you sure, that it is an infection, or maybe instead of that, an irritation / allergic reaction? With a normal small piercing even wound care desinfecting agents should do the job in fighting back an infection. Maybe you should consider trying Octenisept solution, tee trea oil or (if the piercing material does stand that) polividon iodine containing liquids.

Kelly on November 20th, 2008 at 8:49 pmI would go see another doctor, has it got worse over the last week, if so the possiblity that it could be a fungal infection should be considered.
Cheshire on November 21st, 2008 at 2:06 amI did go to see another doctor after my lip was around double it’s normal size. The doctor told me to take the ring out, which I did, and prescribed me some other antibiotics to take the remaining infection. I’ll try to get it pierced again in the summer.:)
Chili on November 21st, 2008 at 10:46 am…I thought removing jewellry whilst infected only made it worse - trapping the infection? I was advised by a piercer I used to go to to do so with a tragus that was giving my problems with hypertrophic scarring. So, not only have I lost a piercing I adored, I’m left with ugly lumps on the tragus.
Hmm. I hope your lip gets better soon Chill
