Are we “Too old for piercing”

My wife and I are 61. I’ve been trying to get her nips pierced. Her argument is that we are too old to get pierced. “That’s for 20 something people.”

TIA

Only in the last 15-20 or so years has it been for 20-somethings.
The roots of American body piercing, from the 1960s on…. primarily people in their 40s-60s.
The youth culture surge came in the late 1980s early 1990s, thanks in part to the book MODERN PRIMITIVES, our own PAUL KING doing a navel piercing on Alicia Silverstone in an Aerosmith video and the advent of the Internet and BME.

You guys are the perfect demographic for body piercing…. someone who wants it because they want it, not because they’re trying to fit in.

  1. Maybe she just doesn’t want her nipples pierced :-p

  2. some of my most loved/enjoyed clients have been in that 40-60’s demographic.

  3. If you are still asking at this point if you should get a piercing than do it for the sake of growing a pair!

Not intending rudeness, but really… at this point in your life if you are still craving attention, don’t do it. i am 38 and looking for the right person to hold my hand and nothing more.

if you aren’t sure, don’t do it until you are.

  4. My oldest client so far was an octagenarian.

  5. Do you have any idea how FREAKING COOL it is that anyone over 50 wants piercings?

Not that it’s a coolness thing, not that you’re doing it for attention, but it warms my heart that basically anyone from all walks of life can walk into a studio and say “pierce me!”.

All this being said, get pierced yourself dammit! Don’t ask your wife to do something she doesn’t want to do. At least not until you can show her it’s NOT just for 20 somethings!

Now to get my mum to agree to a piercing… (she’s 59 this year).

  6. I love what I just read. I happen to love body piercings. I am a 52 year old woman. I have seven piercings in my ears. I had a nostril and cartilage done but unfortunately they didn’t take. I am trying to make up my mind now as to a tragus or eyebrow piercing. Relatives my age say don’t do it but it is my body and I like to express myself in this way. I’m not trying to look young. That doesn’t happen when you are my age. =) It would take a lot more than a piercing. One thing I would like to mention is, how come on your site as well as others that have photos of piercings, I seldom see photos of people in there 50’s or older?

  7. Clairia - you do in the genital piercing galleries!!

I can’t speak for other sites, but bmezine is a contribution-based site so if very few people over the age of fifty submit their pictures, there will be very few pictures of older people with piercings.

  8. You’re never too old, but don’t pressure your wife if she’s not sure. I am 32 and felt a bit old to be getting my nipples pierced 3 years ago, but I’m so glad I did it! I agree with Aggie - how about getting it done yourself first (if you haven’t already)? You will love it, and I bet your wife will too :o)

  9. I’m 45 and I have my belly nose tounge lip and nipples and hood pierced my husban loves them and I might get another hood piercing people in the streets have admired them but at 60 nipple piercings are not that good plus they hurt alot I would recomend a belly nose or tounge piercing to start with. Good luck.

  10. I’m 35 and my mum works in the piercing industry she’s 60 and has slot of piercings such as her belly nose hood nipples eyebrow and cheeks. I think they look cool when I was 1 I got 3piercings in each ear at 5 I got the top of my ears done at nine I got my nose and belly at 12 I got my tounge done at 14i got my belly pierced all the way round 5 times in total and at 18 I got my hood done3 times now I’m thinking on getting both my nipples pierced my mum keeps encouraging me so I think I will I think that if your wife gets her nipples pierced you should get yours done first(I think they hurt quite a bit) nipple piercings are quite cool so you should both get them done I will next week 2 on each. Good luck and stay metal

  11. I am 64 years old and have3/4″ tunnels in my lobes. Now I know that I can’t fit in with the twenty something but I can enjoy modifying my body and having a sense of satisfaction in controlling my own mods, recognizing that I am retired and not required to conform to any specific dress codes or regulations.Besides, the sterotyping notion that I am too old to be modified is, well, in other peoples minds, not necessarily mine.

  12. Your never too old for piercings if you feel you would like them. I had my first piercing a PA done at 70 My artist said this would start me off and I would want some and tattoo as well.

It seems that your wife does not wish to have any piercings. This is similar to me I tried to encourage my wife to have a tattoo and piercings but she is not happy and cannot be persuaded and if I pushed it we should only fall out.
So I suggest you leave it and enjoy your own body modifcations.

My Piecing Artist was correct as 3 months after my first piercing I added a triple lower belly pubic tattoo. Then over past 3 years or so 2 nipple piercing followed by tattoo surround to them an ampallang and final 2 vertical nipple bars giving me crossed nipple piercings. I am pleased with the results.

    Hope my comments help.

  13. I am 49 years old and just got my nipples pierced (male) I didn’t do it for attention or for anyone else. I did it for me and I love them. I agree with some of the other suggestions, get yours pierced first if you haven’t already. I want my wife to get hers pierced but she has no desire so I drop it. If you want something pierced get it done, and who cares what others think.

  14. I’m 51 and have nine piercings in my ears…all done before I hit 40, as I recall. I just got my 2nd (and probably last) tattoo on my right arm (the other is on my left). Now I’m thinking about stretching my lobes just a bit…to an 8 or 6 gauge. A just-turned 30 friend has some neat earrings that made me start thinking about this.

All this has been an evolving journey that aint over yet ! So you’re only too old if you THINK you are !

  16. I’ve been trying to turn my (50+ year old) parents on to the piercing and tattoo thing. I don’t think age has anything to do with body mods, its how you feel when you have them : ]

  17. Diamonds. :)

Seriously… my mother got her ears pierced at age 59 because my father bought her diamond earrings to wear for my wedding.

So… find a shop that will order custom jewelry, and present her with diamonds. :p
