i have a couple questions regarding upper lip frenulum piercings (’smiley’/’scrumper’) and i thought ‘why not?’ since there doesn’t appear to be any questions on here referring to them, anyway.
first question: is it virtually impossible to heal a smiley? i say virtually because i’ve seen some pretty… weirdly placed piercings heal up. so basically what are the chances of it actually healing is what i’m trying to ask, i suppose.
second question: how long, on average, do they last without rejection?
third question: are gum erosion/teeth problems highly common when having this piercing?
thank you very much for your time.
It is certainly not impossible to heal up a lip frenulum piercing! In fact, they tend to heal up quite quickly. It’s a very thin bit of tissue making it a relatively small wound and oral tissue tends to heal up nicely.
Unfortunately due to the instability of this thin tissue, frenulum piercings are prone to migrating out moreso than other piercings would. Wearing a ring in as small a diameter as possible for your anatomy will help lessen this risk as will the aftercare, jewelry material and how you wear it. Pulling the jewelry and playing with it will increase the risk of it migrating down and out.
When considering a lip frenulum piercing, it is important to consider the risk that there may be risk to oral tissue as a result of having jewelry rubbing against it constantly.

My smiley piercing was the easiest to heal, by far… even easier than lobe piercings. It was a bit sore and swollen for the first day, but after that it was virtually painless.
However, I did remove it for a dentist appointment a few months later, and it closed up.
If you want to read my experience, it’s on my IAM page. I think it’s fairly well detailed.

Rhiannon on January 25th, 2009 at 1:41 amI have my smiley done about a year and a half now and it hasnt fallen out yet :)It has migrate downwards a little over time though. I wear a 1.2mm jewelled flatback BCR in it, its really comfortable and looks good.
SheSaidDestroy on January 28th, 2009 at 7:39 pmI was really easy to heal, mine took about 2-3 weeks with daily salt water rinsing and taking care not to hit it with toothbrushes. Its only a tiny bit of skin, pain is minimal and healing is easy. I havent experienced any enamel or gum erosion either. Go for it

Arielle on June 25th, 2009 at 9:27 pmWe had a young girl come in today with a smiley.
Terrible abrasion on her front teeth and a forming gap.
She has had the piercing less than a year.
i had one for 7 months, yeaaars ago…self done in a terrible manner, with terrible jewelry, and it still healed up just fine, and didnt seem to be migrating while i had it. however, it WAS retired due to gum erosion. so i suppose give one a shot, and if you start experiencing any itchy-irritating feelings in your gums, or wear on your teeth, remove it asap!
i sure miss mine, and have though about trying it again some time, properly pierced with better jewelry, but i still doubt my anatomy will allow one
andrea on August 5th, 2009 at 1:22 amI HAVE HAD MY SMILEY FOR A YEAR NOW WENT TO HAVE IT TAKEN OUT AT A PIERCING STUDIO AND IT HAS SO MUCH PLAQUE BUILT UP OVER THE YEAR THAT HE COULDN’T GET IT OUT SO NOW I HAVE TO TRY AT HOME WITH NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS AND HOPE I CAN GET IT OUT. IT HEALED QUICK AND NEVER HURT OR CAUSED ANY TEETH OR GUM PROBLEMS.
JZ on September 25th, 2009 at 2:54 pmI had my smiley for a year, it was so dirty I took it out, and I realised the damage it had done to my gums and it stayed out. I regret it, a lot
