Hi I have a few ?’s about tongue piercings. I am a singer but I really want my tongue pierced but I wanna make sure that if I do go get my tongue piercing that there is nothing that could go wrong that could ruin my voice in any way. I know for a while im going to have a lisp but if I take it out I wanna make sure that things should go back to norma! Thanks much Tim
As long as your tongue is pierced in the correct placement on your tongue and the jewelry you’re wearing is the right size, you shouldn’t have any problem singing.
I’ve had three tongue piercings at one time (I currently just wear two) and I’ve been singing with no problem every day!

I know this sounds like I’m being totally thick but I’m setting up a piercing parlor and i need swell bar sizes. I know what the hell is she doing with a piercing parlor and doesn’t know that?…yeah not the piercer I’m just getting the stuff. So any help here would be very much appreciated thanks.
The piercer will know exactly what variety of barbell lengths to order in so you could simply ask the piercer of your studio. That’s the kind of stuff we learned in our hard-earned apprenticeships, afterall!

Im planning to get my first tattoo soon and i was wondering if doing something like in the picture (http://ronadish.deviantart.com/art/Smoking-Mosh-106132191) is possible since its mostly white, my brother says its possible but im not sure..
also, im planning to get a laser hair removal in the future (not sure when), anyone know what the effect of laser on tattoo’s?
Thanks,
Ron
That could be a potentially beautiful tattoo if you found the right artist for the job. Using minimal oulines and grey wash with white highlights would make that really nice. Choose your artist carefully, please!
Laser used for hair removal will cook the tattoo right out of your skin and could scar you up pretty grossly. Hair removal first, tattoo second.

I got my nose pierced back in October with a stud. It had been a month and I had had no problems with it and I really wanted to put in a ring. So I went to a tattoo shop and asked the guy if it would be alright to change the jewelry now and he said it was fine, so I had him change it to a captive bead ring. It was fine, I didn’t have any problems after I changed until about two weeks later I got sick and was blowing my nose. the ring was being all twisted around in there and I developed a bump on the outside. I took antibiotics have been doing sea salt soaks on it and cleaning it with bactine and a month later the bump is still there. i want to change it back to a stud because the ring seems to get bumped around a lot more than the stud did. so should I go back in and have it changed to a stud and go back to a ring later or would that just make it worse? and any advice on how to make the bump go away?
Hooray for the Search function at the top right of the AskBME page!:

I’ve read and heard from several different places about which, a ring or screw/stud, is better to be pierced with for a nostril piercing.
I just wanted to know the pros and cons of each and if there is one that is better for the healing process.
thanks!
I only offer nostril screws of flatback labret barbells for initial nostril piercings. Rings in nostril piercings are too prone to being knocked around or turned through the piercing while it’s healing and the risk of irritation and inflammation is much higher.
If you would rather wear a ring in your nostril piercing, I would suggest having it pierced with a nostril screw or flatback barbell initially, waiting 12+ weeks and then switching it over to a ring after the piercing has healed and had sufficient time to stabalize. Be sure to tell your piercer before you have the piercing done if you plan to wear a ring in it eventually as it may need to be placed a bit differently to accomodate both jewelry types as per your anatomy.

I am having a problem with my boss. He thinks customers can use retainers (we offer acrylic) after 24 - 48 hours. I say 3 - 4 weeks. How long would you recommend people wait to use retainers?
3-4 weeks from the piercing date? That’s pretty soon to change jewelry in a fresh piercing.
I don’t like acryllic in a piercing ever. Implant grade jewelry is the only thing I offer at my shop to wear in a piercing. If my clients need a retainer, I suggest they wear a glass one.
If someone were to want to wear a retainer, depending on the piercing, I would ask they wait at least 6-8 weeks from the initial piercing time. In some cases, certain piercings just cannot be switched in and out constantly anyway and the piercing may end up needing to be retired from the irritation of being constantly changed of jewelry for work, sports*, etc.
*in the case of sports, most piercings vs. athletics do not fare well and shouldn’t be worn anyway. If it has to happen, bandaging the piercing down with it’s original jewelry in it is a safer alternative than wearing glass. Obviously.

I just pierced my septum.
On the soft spot.
It is slightly crooked but whatever lol.
Anyways.
So it was fine for the first two or three days.
But now I have a headache that will not go away.
Does it have to do with the piercing and if it does is it bad and should I take it out?
The likelihood of your headache being directly related to your new septum piercing seems pretty slim.
You may be experiencing some swelling inside your nose which could be causing some discomfort in your head…?
If you’ve pierced yourself and suspect you may have an infection check with your doctor.

hi there!
I got snakebites around 7 months ago, one of them healed just fine, the other i think i got an infection and had some trouble with it, so after taking antibiotics, and much to my disaproval having to remove the labret stud, I am left with a mucocele, ( http://www.lumpinmouth.com/headlines/ this site really helped out).
I want to repierce my lip, and am thinking on having the mucocele removed, my question is if you know of any cases like this, and the probability of it reocurring?
Thank you, André
If what you have is, in fact, a mucocele, you should consult with your oral surgeon regarding removal and having the area re-pierced. As mucoceles are often caused by localized trauma, you may put yourself at risk of developing another one if you re-pierce the area again.
I personally do not pierce around irritated tissue and would not pierce through or around a client’s mucocele, should I suspect they had one.

A friend of mine got his ears pierced at 14g in early June. Monday (1/12/08) he switched his jewelry from the original jewelry he got when he was pierced (CBR) to a plug. This morning he realized, when he tried to take his earring out to put a new piece of jewelry in that he couldn’t remove the earring. After looking at it, I realized that the o-ring had become embedded in his earlobe.
I was wondering what would be the appropriate way to go about dealing with the situation. Should he go to a doctor? A piercer? And what will need to be done in order to remove the o-ring from his earlobe?
He should have the o-ring taken out right away. A piercer or a doctor could do this pretty easily and in a clean environment. Depending on the severity of the embedded o-ring, it may just need a hot soak and gentle massage to pop the jewelry out. Worse case scenario is that the o-ring needs to be removed surgically.
