Hi,
My name is Efrain Espinoza .I am a tattoo artist from Los Angeles. I was wondering if you could help me, I am trying to come to a fair business arrangement with my two piercers. I just want to know if there is a “standard” arrangement, and what a fair percentage be for procedures, jewelry sales, etc. would be.
Jewelry is being purchased by the piercers.
I supply alot of the materials, disposables etc.
plus ads , promos, etc.
If you can help me thats cool .
Thanks
E
There are a lot of different ways that shops employ piercers, but I’ll tell you how I do it - I employ my staff as full-time staff members, they get paid a very fair and decent hourly wage, and they get all the perks that every other full-time worker in Australia gets (four weeks paid leave a year, ten sick days, superannuation, etc). I buy all the jewellery and supplies and everything else associated with running the business, and my staff get paid whether it’s busy or slow, so they can live their lives like everyone else does and plan their finances accordingly. I’ve worked for a few different shops in my day, getting paid per piercing or a percentage of the piercing and had to buy my own jewellery, etc, and it really sucks, frankly. I’m sure Derek and Lexci and Tiff and everyone else will be happy to chime in with their thoughts on the subject!

I’ve been paid every which-way as a body piercer in my 6 year.
-When I first started, I took it up the ass.
Lexci on March 19th, 2009 at 4:58 pmI managed the studio, worked front end, booked tattoo appointments, dealt with everyone’s shit, looked after inventory and made orders, scrubbed and processed tools and pierced about 50 people a day. I did this for under $15/hour for 11 hours a day. I hated it and I was spiteful and angry at my boss a LOT.
-Then I worked at a shop as a sub-contractor making $12-ish/piercing. Only. I kept my jewelry inventory and my space clean and that was that. I hated it and was broke as shit. (It lasted about a week)
-I’m currently an employee making an hourly wage PLUS Benefits. (And let me tell you, as someone who specializes in what I do and hold an important position in my studio - EMPLOYER-PAID BENEFITS are REALLY beneficial. If I’m sick, I get help ASAP. If I need medication, I get it and I get it paid for. I’m rarely rarely rarely away from work.)
On top of my hourly wage (Which basically pays for me to do all the shop maintenance, front-end, managerial duties) I also get a commission on each piercing/service charge I do. Which makes me push piercing sales harder than if I didn’t want to do a piercing and deal with certain clients. It benefits my employer a lot to do it this way. It’s the best way I’ve ever been paid as a body piercer.
Where i come from standard precedure is; 50% if the owner is supplying jewelry and/or equipment and supplies, 60% if supplied by the piercer. All aftermarket jewelry profit is soley that of whoever bought it. Works for me and really motivates you to do things such as pass out flyers
