Good morning to everyone at BME,
Just sending an question though to ask for some help or information. I was just recently asked by our local city council to hold talks with the youth of the district. To try and curve the amount of self/ home piercings.
I am chasing any good information about the harm that occurs and the dangers. I do have some of my own information. But would like to have better information. The youths have a some sort of respect for me.
So the council is hoping it will encourage them to listen and learn. As of recently the kids have been busted piercing each other with same needles. Which is the worst thing out there. Then on the other side the parents and teachers have no knowledge or understanding of why they do it. So they panic.
So anything you can suggest would be very wonderful photo, stories?
Cheers

Dion on March 21st, 2009 at 7:59 pmWould it be worth doing harm reduction as part of this campaign? Best way is to go to a pro, if you don’t for gods sake don’t spread hep C?
Cheshire on March 22nd, 2009 at 9:16 pmHey Cheshire.
They have pretty much tried everything possible to them. Doctors, Nurses and everything in between.
So they decided to ask me. To try and curve the problem, by explaining to them the risk and that there is a safe solution for them.

Dion on March 23rd, 2009 at 6:23 ameek. i did DIY my lobe once. Not the best idea ever. email me if you want me to write a short story on it. cnclara@netvigator.com
Clara on March 24th, 2009 at 7:16 amI think educating them (the youths, teachers etc) about positive experiences from studios would probably work, and maybe even ask a decent local piercer to do a piece for it, which would work both ways - teach the youths and give them publicity thus gaining more customers.
And definatly educate them on the risks involved in self piercing.
Millie on March 24th, 2009 at 11:35 amI think it would be cool if they got a really heavily modified artist to come in and say a couple words. I’d listen to them before I ever listened to my parents or a teacher. That’s for sure.
katy on March 25th, 2009 at 6:29 pmHey guys. Well i am a body piercer i run the only really local studio for this entire area. Fairly modified ^^. But yeah was going to show them the good n negative sides to been pierced.
I thought about doing a piercing there but, council regulations and crap would make it just hell to get the licence in time to do one…
Cheers

In my opinion, one of the ways to get the message through is to explain the procedures and risks, while showing them pictures of shady DIY piercings that went really wrong…
Miss Daisy on March 26th, 2009 at 9:21 pmInfected, keloids, scars, bad placement… And then show them properly done piercings , for comparison.
If they don’t care about the safety part of it, maybe the aesthetics aspect will make them think twice…
just my 2cts!
^^ I’ve comprised a folder of a heap of awesome done piercing from myself and other artist. Then a second folder of all the dodgin ones, of infections, scarring and just plan stupid ones
Everyone allowed to have ther 2 cents miss daisy
its the only way ppl can learn is to take advice from others.
But also trying to convince the councils involved with this. That if they want to do it the safe way, organize a place for me to pierce once a month and give the kids a safe alternative.
Pretty unlikely they do that tho.. MONEY lol
Cheers

Dion, perhaps your best bet is to draw the comparisons that self piercing and needle sharing has with IV drug use and unprotected sex. The only difference is context, the risks are just as high if not higher if DIY piercing is prevalent in your area. Sharing a piercing needle is no different health-wise to sharing a U100 to bang smack.
I’m not sure about the situation where you live, but in Australia where needle possession is legal, “self piercing kits” are unfortunately way too common amongst even the “better regarded” piercing establishments. Depending on the social situation where you are, this could either be a harm reduction saviour for the kids or an absolute disaster which is making the situation worse…
As a piercer take advantage of the fact that you’re “real”, as compared to the teachers and social workers they’ve long stopped listening to. As you know, this is very serious business…. I’m sure you’ll find a way to get it through to them.
Best of luck, I’m still on IAM time to time if there’s anything I can do to help. cheers.
redeye on March 28th, 2009 at 4:29 amSelfpiercing may be very bad ot not bad ad all… Depends how it is done…
Stormchaser on March 28th, 2009 at 1:03 pmAnother con to self piercing is if the jewelry is just something cheap (which would probably be what they are putting in…) then they can become allergic to nickel which is hard to avoid when it comes to things like the buttons on jeans, or other cheap jewelry which can be very unpleasant in itself… You might think you’re safe to wear something, only to have a bunch of disgusting, irritated blisters appear.
A) It’s a hassle to have to do things like patch over the pieces of metal in jeans, or paint over them with nail polish.
B) You’ll become uncomfortable if you have a reaction
C) You’ll have gross looking blisters that you will probably scratch even if you don’t mean to which will then bleed and maybe get infected. Making it look worse.
It’s not as serious as spreading Hepatitis or HIV, but you still have to live with it and it is an annoyance…
There are plenty of pictures out there of nickel allergy reactions… They can get pretty nasty looking. I’d say show some of those pictures.
Danielle on March 29th, 2009 at 5:42 pmPS - If you google ‘nickel allergy reaction’ with either the moderate filter, or no filter, the first image is a good one for showing how bad a reaction can get. And it shows how something basic like a belt buckle can set it off.
Danielle on March 29th, 2009 at 5:45 pmI think another good strategy is to talk to the parents about signing for their kids to get peircings at tattoo parlors, because in my experience one of the biggest reasons for kids doing their own peircings is that they need parental permission at tattoo parlors, and if their parents wont give it to them, their only choice is d.i.y.. I have been forced to do all my piercings myself because of that reason. allthough I was smart about it, and used a single use sealed packaged piercing needle every time, and cleaned things very well, and everything I have turned out perfect, and I have had most for about 2 years now. so talk to the parents because I think they are the biggest reason. I just have 11 more months to wait untill I am 18, and I am spending that entire day in a tattoo parlor. I would be glad to give an interview about my experience and opinions.

That or patience.
Shawn Porter on April 2nd, 2009 at 7:00 pmI would like to thank everyone that took time to responsed to this question.
The event was alot quieter then we expected. But the dozon or so kiddies that came to where we were, was intrigued by what can be done from poor/ bad habits while piercing at home. Also show them alot of blow outs of overly fast stretched ears. That lit there eyes up. Handed out alot of flyer, business cards and just promoted safe piercing as a whole to the youth.
Patience is a virtue they say, this generation has lost alot of patience. Even knowing fun well they can obtain safe, clean needles and either sharps containers from the council here. They still believe that bobby pins(yes bobby pins) are a safe and awesome way to pierced there mates.
I’ve seen kids who have used a flat head screw driver and a hammer to punch out cartlidge of the ear??? Why coz they thought it be cool?? Beside the medical cost afterwards.
But in the end i believe if I/we as a community can get just a few of the kids to listen, it may slowly curve the problem.
Cheers
Dion
ps.. nothing against home piercing when you know what your doing. but in the end its always better to get a pro to do it.
THANKS AGAIN
