So i want to get two dermals where a normal sternum piercing would be. how painful (compare to other piercings?) can i expect this to be?

This is going to sound like a smart-ass answer, but that’s not (mostly) my intention.

They will hurt more than some piercings and less than others. Without knowing what you’ve had done, it’s hard to say. And, even if I did know what you had done, it wouldn’t be a lot of help, as obviously, pain is relative. Add to that variations in the skills of the piercer performing the procedure…there is no way to give a reliable comparison.

Most people I’ve done dermal anchors on say they hurt less than they expected. A few have thought they hurt more than they expected.

Best of luck.

  1. People still ask this question?

    “OMG did that piercing hurt?”
“Only as much as a 12 guage needle through an inch of flesh would.”

  2. They’re very very bearable. It’s a very hot stingy feeling which can later turn into pulling, pinching and sharp pain with the taper or jewellery (depending on how your getting them done). I rather get a microdermal on my sternum then a navel piercing or a septum piercing. Even though it takes longer.

  3. i just got the exact piercing you’re asking about. currently i have my nose and belly button, and in the past i’ve also had my labret and nipples done. all i can say is that for me it hurt, but the only thing about it that bothered me was how long it took. it’s not a 1,2,3 like a normal piercing. there was more of a burning/pressure sensation that i didn’t like, but it wasn’t unbearable.

  4. About a month ago I got two anchors placed vertically on my sternum. It was definitely painful, but it’s nothing too intense. It’s essentially an initial sharp pain from the needle but after that, it’s a blunt pressure-type pain. All I can tell ya is they look pretty dope and once you see them you won’t even be concerned about the pain you just experienced :)

  5. Dermal anchors are semi-permanent piercings. If you are worried about the level of pain, it’s pretty clear you aren’t wanting them that bad. When you decide that you want them regardless of the pain level is when you should decide to have them done. I only say this because in order to have them removed you usually need to have them cut out.
