I was cooking they other day, when I thought of this random idea. I’m just wondering if this would work/be a plausible thing to do.
If I made a sea-salt soak and then put it on the stove to boil, and then let the steam hit my ear, would this have any positive effect?
Absolutely! I was talking with another piercer about his ear cartilage aftercare suggestions and he told me he has his clients “steam” their cartilage piercings and that he finds great success with it.
It makes sense as any physical trauma to cartilage can irritate the piercing and cause hypertrophic scar tissue and uncomfortable swelling.
A good steaming would help promote circulation to the ear and to the piercing and aid in the healing.
…careful not to scald yourself, of course.

The best way to steam your face (girls do this for getting blackheads out and whatnot
is NOT to bend over a stove with a pot on the boil, which is a bit hazardous. Take the pot off when it boils, put it on a table and bend over with a towel draped over your head to create a mini-sauna.
Xenobiologista on August 11th, 2009 at 1:26 pmmind you it wont be “salt water” steam since the melting point of NaCl is 801°C and the boiling point 1465 °C…it’ll just be distilled water vapor.

katy prost on August 19th, 2009 at 1:03 pm…but not *strictly* correct. the aerosol of the steam will carry small amounts of salt water droplets, but not nearly enough to maintain the isotonic concentration of 0.9% which enable cleaning through reverse osmosis.
of course this doesn’t mean that steam isn’t/can’t be effective - isotonic saline soaks are the most general purpose cleaning option but not the be all and end all.
these guys put it better than i can at the moment: http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00492.htm
if pierced-zag is a smarty pants, i guess i’m just a pedantic bastard…
