does a bad habit hurt in the long run?

I want to get my bottom lip pierced, but I have this bad habit of biting the inside of my bottom lip. I guess my question is, whether or not this will be a problem? If I continue to bite my lip will it bother my piercing, or like mess it up? Can it get infected from it? I want to be sure that I do the right thing and not hurt my lip even more.

Compusively biting on your lip will be a negative thing to a healing piercing. If you get in the habit of chewing the actual jewelry, it will wreak havoc on your teeth.

  1. My lip biting habits meant that my vertical labrets never healed properly, I pulled them both out after maybe 3 months of slow but progressive scar buildup. I still have some minor scarring I can feel physically but nothing visible. There’s not a lot of harm in getting the piercing and finding out how you go, as long as you’re willing to give it up if you find you can’t stop playing with it!

I’m also a smoker and used to chew my nails - all the usual oral fixation cliches - so I guess it’s no surprise they failed for me really…

  2. How about piercing your upper lip instead then?
