downsizing a nostril piercing

Hi there,

I recently got my left nostril pierced at my favorite shop by a guy that knows what he is doing, and it is a little large for my liking.

When I initialy got it done, I requested that the smallest guage jewelry possible was used. I’ve seen my friends with nostrils done at what looks like ether 20 or 18 guage, thats all I wanted. My piercer told me that they use standard size nostril jewelry, and that it would be a tiny hole.

Just today, about two weeks later, I popped the nostril screw out to change it with a ring, just to find that the jewelry is much larger than I thought. I compaired it to my other piercings, and it appears to be ether a 14 or a 16, ether way, much larger than I had hoped.

I wanted a dainty little hole, not this, and I have no clue how hard or posible it is to downsize cartalage piercings such as this.

Many thanks!

If you’d like to wear smaller guage jewelry in your nostril piercing (I personally find 18g to be a nice size to keep the piercing stable and safe but not too chunky) simply put smaller guage jewelry in and allow your piercing to shrink up around it.
Be afore warned that switching back to your old jewelry will be a bit of a stretch and could be both uncomfortable and irritating to your piercing.

nose bump?

Friday January 16th, 2009 @ 8:40 PM

I got my nose pierced back in October with a stud. It had been a month and I had had no problems with it and I really wanted to put in a ring. So I went to a tattoo shop and asked the guy if it would be alright to change the jewelry now and he said it was fine, so I had him change it to a captive bead ring. It was fine, I didn’t have any problems after I changed until about two weeks later I got sick and was blowing my nose. the ring was being all twisted around in there and I developed a bump on the outside. I took antibiotics have been doing sea salt soaks on it and cleaning it with bactine and a month later the bump is still there. i want to change it back to a stud because the ring seems to get bumped around a lot more than the stud did. so should I go back in and have it changed to a stud and go back to a ring later or would that just make it worse? and any advice on how to make the bump go away?

Hooray for the Search function at the top right of the AskBME page!:

Ring or stud?

Friday January 16th, 2009 @ 8:31 PM

I’ve read and heard from several different places about which, a ring or screw/stud, is better to be pierced with for a nostril piercing.

I just wanted to know the pros and cons of each and if there is one that is better for the healing process.

thanks!

I only offer nostril screws of flatback labret barbells for initial nostril piercings. Rings in nostril piercings are too prone to being knocked around or turned through the piercing while it’s healing and the risk of irritation and inflammation is much higher.

If you would rather wear a ring in your nostril piercing, I would suggest having it pierced with a nostril screw or flatback barbell initially, waiting 12+ weeks and then switching it over to a ring after the piercing has healed and had sufficient time to stabalize. Be sure to tell your piercer before you have the piercing done if you plan to wear a ring in it eventually as it may need to be placed a bit differently to accomodate both jewelry types as per your anatomy.

Septum/Headache

Friday January 16th, 2009 @ 4:06 PM

I just pierced my septum.

On the soft spot.

It is slightly crooked but whatever lol.

Anyways.

So it was fine for the first two or three days.

But now I have a headache that will not go away.

Does it have to do with the piercing and if it does is it bad and should I take it out?

The likelihood of your headache being directly related to your new septum piercing seems pretty slim.
You may be experiencing some swelling inside your nose which could be causing some discomfort in your head…?
If you’ve pierced yourself and suspect you may have an infection check with your doctor.

getting a septum piercing

Tuesday January 6th, 2009 @ 10:08 AM

I apologize if I have missed this question if it has been posted before but I am in a hurry to get ready for work. I will be getting a septum piercing in the future (how far into the future I do not know hence why I am researching) and was wondering if you could use segment rings as jewelry for a septum piercing.

Thanks

Yes you can. Be warned - they are fiddly to change without tools, though.

Septum with no “sweet spot”?

Friday November 7th, 2008 @ 10:20 AM

i dont have a “sweet spot” in my nose for a septum piercing so i wanted to know if i could still get it pierced and if so does that mean they pierce the cartilage and can i still stretch my septum if i dont have a sweet spot

It is possible to do a septum piecing even if you don’t have a “sweet spot”. The piecing will have to go through cartilage. This will typically result in a slightly more painful piercing to get done as well as a piercing that may take a bit longer to heal and may be a bit more sore while healing.

Stretching the piercings SHOULD still be possible. However, you will probably find it more (perhaps significantly more) painful to stretch, you will probably have to wait longer between stretches and you may be limited as to how bit you can stretch.

Antibiotics, septum piercing

Friday October 17th, 2008 @ 8:15 AM

Hi there, I’m at the tail end of my antibiotics course, i.e. I’m not sick anymore just finishing the tablets off. Would it be a good idea to take advantage of this extra ‘protection’ and get my septum pierced? Thanks!

There’s no extra protection per se as presumably the antibiotics were prescribed to treat an existing infection. I would be inclined to give your body a bit of time to recover before giving it another challenge, like dealing with a fresh wound.

Septum tunnels?

Tuesday October 7th, 2008 @ 11:01 AM

I’m asking this massively in advance, and it’s probably a dumb question, but anyway. I’ve just gotten my septum pierced and I’m planning on beginning to stretch it once it heals. I’d like to put a tunnel it when I get to the size I want, but my searches for “septum tunnel” aren’t turning up much of anything… So I’m guessing I just get a regular tunnel, like the ones I’d use in my ears, in the size I want. Am I right?

You are indeed.

Some tunnels will come in different lengths too - the shorter ones fit nice and comfy. I have a ss 4mm internally-threaded ‘top hat’ tunnel in mine and it is so comfortable I forget it’s there.

Custom Jewellery

Friday October 3rd, 2008 @ 7:07 PM

So I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a studio in Toronto that does really good custom jewellery. My request is actually quite simple, a 14g ss nostril screw at the right length, but these are actually hard to find. I also find the online stores that have done them for me can never get it just right, so I would prefer to talk to a real person.

Any help is appretiated…

You can search studios via 411.BMEzine.com

To make it simple for you here’s the search you’re looking for: http://411.bmezine.com/studios/regional/north-america/canada/ontario

Personally if you came to me, and I was back working in Toronto, I’d be getting in touch with Anatometal or Infinite Body to obtain what you are looking for.

One question though are you looking for an actual Nostril Screw in 14ga or would you like a Labret Stud instead? Personally when I had my nostrils pierced I used 14ga Neometal Threadless Labrets. I found the labret stud worked best as there was no need to bend the jewelry at all, all I needed to do is measure the width and that’s it. Hence why I personally switched over to using labret studs almost exclusively when I was working in Niagara Falls. That way nobody had to really worry about the inner portion hanging out or not being bent properly, etc.

Piercing through moles?

Wednesday October 1st, 2008 @ 9:17 PM

I want to get my nose pierced but I have a clear mole right where I’d like to get it done. Is it possible to pierce through it, or would/could the piercing be right next to it?

I’m not familiar with “clear moles”, but it is best to leave moles well-enough alone. No piercing through them. The piercing would likely heal fine, but you will increase the chances of something that is probably fairly benign becoming problematic. The piercing should be able to be done near the mole…just not through it.
