I recently went to a Tattoo/Piercing shop with a friend who was getting her nipples pierced. My friend is pretty big breasted, and when the time finally came to pierce them, the male piercer insisted she `play` with her nipples to make them hard, so that he could pierce them easier. Is it true that hard nipples are easier to pierce, and is that the correct way to ask a customer a request like that?
Tell your friend she was exploited. This is not a professional request. Back in the old school we used to prefer hard nipples to pierce, to make them hard we used alcohol (after the then standard iodine) which stimulated them in a totally non-sexual way. Nowadays, we don’t even keep alcohol in the shop (maybe a bottle of whiskey for after hours, but no rubbing alcohol) and we really don’t need erect nipples for modern piercing technique. In any case asking your customer to play with there nipples should be saved for a party at Xanadont not in a professional shop environment.

I have a pretty quick question. Is there any contraindication to reusing a needle for more than one piercing on the same person? For example, using one needle to pierce both of someone’s lobes. Seems like a bad idea to me.
Needles are CHEAP. This used to be common practice for lobes because a) “it’s ok b/c it’s on the same person” and b) b/c lobe tissue is soft enough not to dull the needle considerably.
However, reusing the needle increases the chance of cross contamination and deteriorates the cutting surface of the needle. At 25 cents a pop, reusing needles in this day and age is 100% unacceptable.

I was looking for more information on a dolphin piercing. The BME Encyclopedia doesn’t really have much on it.

What else would you like to know? Here’s a useless fact though. Before I discovered the internet, somewhere around 1997 I thought I invented the dolphin piercing, I called it a Prince Orbital.

So is it safe to assume that if a 7/16″ plug isn’t visible when I speak, a split tongue wouldn’t be either?

I’ve had my vertical hood pierced for almost a week now, and it is still bleeding. What should I do? Should I be concerned?
It’s not uncommon for genital piercings to spot-bleed for a week or more. Definitely do NOT do salt soaks, as that will exacerbate bleeding - just keep it dry and put pressure on it if it starts bleeding excessively. It should sort itself out within a few more days.

Yes, thank you, Captain Obvious - if one is allergic to adhesive (which one would have undoubtedly figured out already from band-aids, tape, etc), then obviously, don’t tape a piece of jewellery to yourself to ascertain sensitivity. If, however, you’re part of the vast, teeming majority of people on Earth who are NOT allergic to adhesive, then this plan should be fine. Duh.

Hey guys, I have a quick question about getting my ears re-pierced (they closed up completely after I removed my 6 gauge CBR’s a few years ago). Anyway, my piercer says that the biggest she’s willing to pierce my lobes is 8 gauge. However, she is willing to scalpel them. What’s the smallest size that you would recommend getting lobes scalpeled? Thank you for all your hard work!
The smallest I really scalpel lobes is maybe 8 or 9mm (0ga to 00ga) - anything smaller than that, I just pierce with a large-gauge needle (which I have up to 6mm, about 2ga), it’s kind of easier on everybody. However, I can’t believe that you had your lobes stretched to 6ga and they closed up completely! You seriously can’t get an 18ga taper through them, with a little massage and some patience? I’d stretch the holes you’ve already got before I made more scar tissue, if I were you.

Tape one of the suspicious plugs to the inside of your thigh or wrist (areas with sensitive skin) for the day. By the end of the day (or maybe even with an hour or two), you’ll know if you’re allergic to the material. Just make sure you check it often so if you are allergic, you don’t get a really bad rash.

Hi, I really want to get my septum pierced but I have a lot of scar tissue on the inside of my nose from an operation - would the piercer be able to go through that or would it cause a problem?

It would really depend on your individual anatomy and the level of scarring, but I should think it would be possible. Go have a chat to a quality piercer and see what they think! It’s generally fine to pierce through scar tissue, although it may be a little more uncomfortable for a few seconds during the actual piercing.
